When it comes to mid-length skirts, there is one important rule: do NOT wear skirts (or trousers for that matter) which stop at the widest part of your calf – it is unflattering because it generates the illusion of your legs being wider than they are and having no definition.  It is far better to find a skirt which is either just below the knee (“knee-length)” or in the 3-4 inches above your ankle (the “midi”). We are a big fan of A-line midi’s (see Zoe’s 40th) because they look fantastic on tall women. The knee-length skirt, on the other hand, can be a tricky one to pull off but immensely rewarding if you get it right – elegance personified. If you opt for a pencil skirt, then balance it out with a loose fitting silk blouse or a t-shirt. If you prefer A-line or a pleated skirt then a slim-fitting rollneck would be a good option.

HøF Top 5

ASOS – a tall girl’s loyal friend, you can always rely on ASOS Tall to have a selection of affordable, on trend designs and when it comes to knee-length skirts it’s no different. This burgundy high-waisted skirt showcases a classic autumn colour beautifully and the asymmetric hem is incredibly flattering on long legs. Pair with a neutral coloured top or blouse – avoid elaborate detailing or pattern and let the skirt do all the talking.

M&S – another winner from the high street stalwart. If only there was less product to sift through at M&S, HøF would spend a lot more time there. Big in 2015, pleats have got serious staying power, permeating the sartorial landscape in 2016 from Topshop to Valentino. Update the look with an on-trend metallic version, pairing it with your favourite knitwear and trainers for a laid-back look or dress it up with a leather jacket and black boots or heels.  Alex Stedman of The Frugality is a master of this skirt (and much else).

Roland Mouret – if you’re after something a bit special going into the festive season look no further than this deep red velvet skirt from Roland Mouret. Velvet has taken the fashion world by storm this Autumn/Winter and it’s not going anywhere soon. Pair the skirt with a simple black shirt or blouse and a pair of ankle boots or statement heels. This skirt will get you noticed.

Essentiel – emerald green is the colour of the season. Sadly for HøF, the colour is a tricky one for us as it seems to perfectly match the colour of our veins! It would be remiss of us to leave it out for that reason, however, as this metallic version from Essentiel will look smoking hot on tall ladies of darker or warmer skin tones than our translucent ones! Pair with Essie Stylenomics nail polish.

Zara – Zara has a fantastic collection of mid length skirts. Opt for their “midi” versions which are a great length on longer frames. We love this Printed Leather Effect Skirt, paired with a neutral coloured roll neck and a pair of ankle boots. If you haven’t already it’s time to invest in a good pair of black ankle boots – they can be paired with almost anything; most styles of denim – boyfriend, cropped, wide leg & skinny, just leave a sliver of skin – a midi skirt, a mini skirt or even a LBD.
